The Work
The Oversight isn't a tribute; it’s a confrontation. This is John Chaney at his most visceral—the Hall of Fame scowl that kept North Broad on its toes and the rest of the NCAA in fear. This 18x24 acrylic study on canvas captures the man who turned Temple into a sanctuary for the overlooked and the underestimated.
The aesthetic is pure Philly concrete. By trading standard Owls cherry for a bruised palette of oxidized copper, deep forest greens, and industrial oranges, the piece feels like a mural found in a North Philly alleyway. The application is aggressive—the canvas tooth holds onto heavy, unblended strokes that define the wear on his face, while the stark white dress shirt stands out like a badge of discipline in a sea of chaotic, red-washed energy. It’s the look of a man who didn't just coach basketball; he manufactured men.
Artist’s Note: If you know Philly, you know this face. It’s the look of "no excuses." I wanted to capture the intensity that made the city respect him and the world fear him.
